Why Instagram crops your photos — and how to stop it

Instagram enforces strict aspect ratio limits in the feed: portrait images must be no taller than 4:5, and landscape images no wider than 1.91:1. If your photo falls outside these bounds, Instagram automatically crops it — often cutting off heads, feet, or the most important part of the composition.

The standard workaround is to add a white (or colored) border around the image, effectively shrinking the photo inside a larger canvas that fits Instagram's required ratio. The result is a "letterboxed" or "matted" look that keeps every pixel of your original shot intact.

Many photographers intentionally lean into the bordered aesthetic — it gives a feed a consistent, gallery-like appearance, especially for portrait or street photography where the full composition matters. The white frame has become a recognizable style on its own.

Why most tools get this wrong

Most apps that claim to "fit photos for Instagram" still upload your images to their servers — adding unnecessary latency and, more importantly, handing your photos to a third party. Others compress your image during export, silently reducing quality before it even reaches Instagram's own compression pass.

Border Boost runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your photos never leave your device. Processing is instant because there is no upload step, and output quality is lossless — the border is added as a canvas extension around your original pixels.

Frequently asked questions

How do I post a full photo on Instagram without cropping?

Add a border around your photo to fill Instagram's required 4:5 aspect ratio. Border Boost does this automatically — drag in your photo, select 4:5, and download the bordered image ready to upload.

What aspect ratio does Instagram require?

Instagram feed posts support 1:1 (square), 4:5 (portrait), and 1.91:1 (landscape). The 4:5 portrait ratio takes up the most screen space and tends to get the most engagement. Border Boost targets any of these without cropping your original.

Will adding a border reduce my photo quality?

No. Border Boost extends your canvas and outputs a lossless PNG or high-quality JPEG. Your original pixels are never recompressed or degraded by the bordering process.

Is Border Boost free to use?

Yes, completely free. No account needed, no upload required, and no photos ever leave your device.
